Young architects, craftsmen, and artists are redesigning a social housing complex for elderly residents in the Italian north-west region Liguria, transforming it into a more sustainable and welcoming space. Supported by BE-WoodEN, our project promoting timber in public housing, they are taking part in a challenging hackathon to bring fresh ideas to life.
The property, acquired by ARTE Imperia (part of the network of our Italian member, Federcasa), will be converted into 18 small apartments, offering older residents an affordable and manageable home. “The hackers” will be inspired by the New European Bauhaus Compass, to rethink the common areas—turning them into vibrant meeting spaces for both residents and the wider community. They will also design wooden structures that are both beautiful and practical.
Winning projects will be brought to life in the pilot and showcased at the final conference in Brussels, where an award ceremony will celebrate the best ideas.
