Affordable housing crisis in the EU: why and how should Europe act?

Online, 7 March 2022Save the dateOn the eve of the ministerial meeting initiated by the French Presidency of the Council which will bring together the 27 housing ministers of the European Union in Nice on March, 8th, L’Union Sociale pour l'Habitat (USH), Housing Europe, the think-tank Confrontations Europe, and Maison de l'Europe will organise a web conference on March, 7th to discuss the role of the EU in the context of the affordable housing crisis affecting Member States.
In the presence of the Commissioner responsible for the European Pillar of Social Rights, Nicolas Schmit and the rapporteurs from the European Parliament, the Committee of the Regions (CoR), and the European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) on the affordable housing dossier, the conference will bring on the table for discussion the objectives of the European Commission that influence the level of affordable housing in Europe. We will put housing in the context of the Recovery Plans, EU’s cohesion policy, climate-related directives, the Renovation Wave, the fight against homelessness and the mechanisms that could be implemented to boost the necessary investments.
France will present its reading of the European mechanisms, particularly focusing on housing in the scope of the 2021-2027 Cohesion Policy programme, the European alliance for sustainable and inclusive social housing, and its intermediated loans from the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Council of Europe Development Bank (CEB), as well as the European calls for projects within the framework of the New European Bauhaus and the Affordable Housing Initiative.
