Ministerial Conference on Housing and Construction

Housing Ministers are meeting in Nice

Right at the start of its six-month Council Presidency, France announced its decision to reconnect the 27 EU housing ministers on the 7th and 8th of March in Nice to discuss the European challenges of a burning issue which is a national and regional competence - the access to decent and affordable housing. The last time EU housing leaders met in this format was nearly a decade ago, in 2013.

On the eve of the ministerial meeting initiated by the French Presidency of the Council which will bring together the 27 housing ministers of the European Union in Nice on March, 8th, L’Union Sociale pour l'Habitat (USH), Housing Europe, the think-tank Confrontations Europe, and Maison de l'Europe will organise a web conference on March, 7th to discuss the role of the EU in the context of the affordable housing crisis affecting Member States.

Buildings have the largest potential for improving energy efficiency and mitigating greenhouse gas emissions. Decarbonizing the housing stock is very costly and creates a financial burden on inhabitants, often causing “energy poverty” among lower-income population. In the UNECE region which includes most of the “rich” countries in the world, almost 42 million face arrears on their utility bills and more than 52 million people cannot keep their home adequately warm. There is a need for implementing large scale housing renovation programmes that are affordable for all. Such programmes are essential to meeting the goals of the Paris Agreement and related SDGs.

Ending Homelessness post-Covid 19: what social housing policies and partnerships?

The pandemic has clearly demonstrated the importance of securing access to adequate and affordable homes. Not having a home or living in overcrowded housing were some of the strongest predictors of Covid19 infections. Homelessness increased rapidly over the last decade, and further increases in the number of people who experience homelessness and severe housing exclusion is likely in the aftermath of the pandemic.

Housing Europe Annual Conference & Social Housing Film Festival

16-17 June 2021 | Digital meet-up

On 16th June, Housing Europe's Annual Conference 'New European Bauhaus #BuildingCommunities' will bring together online public, cooperative and social housing providers, European city mayors, architects and EU officials with the aim to define how we can harness design to go beyond social inclusion and create Next Generation Neighbourhoods. The conference will also kick off the two-day Social Housing Film Festival (16-17 June), a compilation of 18 thought-provoking films in different kind of genres that all have two things in common - the power of public, cooperative or social housing to improve people’s lives and a strong human element.

Together towards zero pollution - becoming the change we need

The Zero Pollution ambition can only be realised by working together and joining forces of all actors of society. To this end, this session launches the Zero Pollution Stakeholder Platform, which will carry forward the discussions from the EU Green Week towards more regular exchanges and sharing of good practices. Together with the Committee of the Regions, the Commission will organised regular interactions on topics of common interest with the aim to meet again for the next Zero Pollution ambition conference in 2023.

Conference “Towards a European approach to Housing Policy”

In the context of the current pandemic, it has become particularly important to understand the effects thereof on the housing sector and how the right to housing has been protected by the various Member States, as well as to reflect on the establishment of a European vision for the housing policy that could guarantee access to housing with dignity at accessible prices.
