France: No Minister for Housing in the new government
Union Sociale pour l’Habitat reacts
Paris, 1 June 2017 | SocialHousing Europe French member, USH regrets that the Government as announced on 17 May 2017 by the new President, Emmanuel Macron seems not to place housing and city policy at the heart of its priorities. A proof for that is the absence of a Minister dealing with these issues.
The French Social Housing Sector or the so called “Hlm Movement” recalls that social housing invests 16 billion Euros every year in all regions and houses more than 11 million citizens. During the presidential campaign, housing associations had put forward numerous proposals to facilitate the access of more people to social housing, to further boost the energy transition, to encourage professional mobility and to play its full role as a social operator. Jean-Louis Dumont, President of USH commented: "Despite the negative signal that there is no full-fledged ministry, the Hlm Movement will continue on behalf of the 11 million tenants to act on the ground and with the public authorities to defend the right to housing for all."
