Our Projects

We lead and take part in several European projects to translate our policy objectives into action.

Public, cooperative, and social housing providers are working on the new frontiers in our sector. Decarbonising homes in a just way, shaping exemplary neighbourhoods, relying on circularity to put precious materials into reuse, backing up decisions by data, lifting energy poverty, introducing shared mobility, setting up innovative finance schemes, you name it. Here are the projects we have already completed.

ARV

ARV

The EU Green Deal was created, among other things, to encourage building and renovating in an energy and resource-efficient way. In this context, attractive, resilient, and affordable solutions are needed, and the ARV project is addressing this through its Climate Positive Circular Communities (CPCC). The goal: speed up the deep energy renovations and the deployment of energy and climate measures in the construction and energy industries.
To achieve this, the ARV project will employ a novel concept relying on 6 demonstration urban regeneration projects representing different European climates and contexts with high ambitions in environmental, social and economic sustainability. One of the 6 demos is managed by the social housing provider Sonderborg Andelsboligforening, a member of the Housing Europe network.

BARRIO

BARRIO aims to streamline and enhance large-scale building renovations through a comprehensive approach that includes demand aggregation, supply coordination, and the use of industrialized prefabricated solutions. The project aims to propose a solution for addressing renovation fragmentation, improving energy efficiency, and fostering sustainability. Its approach aligns with the EU-level objectives for deep renovation and carbon reduction in the building sector. To achieve the project’s goals, a Defragmentation Multidisciplinary Toolkit (DMT) will be developed. Affordable housing providers will take part to test potential comprehensive and cost-effective renovation solutions.

Be-WoodEN

Be-WoodEN

Everyone should be able to enjoy beauty. This is why the New European Bauhaus promotes sustainable, inclusive, and beautiful housing. At this intersection, we find the BE-WoodEN project, aiming to provide a series of capacity-building activities, putting a focus on how innovative wood construction and community-centered space creation can be further introduced to social housing. By following the principles of the NEB Compass, BE-WoodEN will seek to advance building decarbonization and circularity by removing barriers to the wider use of wood and bio-based materials. This will be tested in practice through two social housing pilots, consisting of activities related to the design phase and the valorization of the local wood supply chain.

He will evaluate and promote the replication of capacity-building and innovation labs results through surveys and tools. Additionally, he will help build a network of professionals applying NEB and place-making principles. Public housing by ARTE Imperia and ACER Reggio Emilia in Italy are offering two pilots for demonstration.

Build Up Speed

Build Up Speed

BuildUPspeed wants to accelerate the volume and depth of deep renovation of the EU building stock, supporting the EU Renovation Wave, by introducing and implementing a Market Activation Platform, to accelerate industrialised renovation solutions. The project will build upon the legacy, the approach and the results of several chapters of the ‘Energiesprong’ approach. Housing Europe will support business modelling and further market uptake of BuildUPspeed tools and services via the adoption of a large variety of distribution channels. Domofrance Logement Social based in Bordeaux and Instituto Valenciano de la Edificacion are the representation of the sector within the project.

drOp

drOp

Social housing districts can also become inclusive smart neighbourhoods, and help achieve climate neutrality by 2050. To make this possible, the Horizon Europe project drOp aims to create an Integrated Renovation Methodology, a set of guidelines for district-level renovation, meant to support the public sector from the city and regional level, urban planners, construction experts or neighbourhood associations. It mainly aims to promote social innovation and boost the local economy, and with that purpose drOp will adopt a human-centred approach, integrate innovative technologies and explore the growth creation potential of cultural and creative industries. The pilot city of Ermua, in Spain, will be supported by the two peer-cities of Elva, in Estonia, and Matera, in Italy, which will also aim to replicate results. drOp is also a New European Bauhaus example and replicator within the Affordable Housing Initiative.

EqualHouse

EqualHouse

Housing inequality is an issue encountered all over Europe, yet there is no general overview, with all its ramifications currently being studied separately. EqualHouse is a research project that aims to identify key housing inequalities across Europe, analyze their scale and causes, and provide guidance for policymakers. The project will explore the links between housing, income, and wealth inequality, and propose solutions for issues like unaffordability, homelessness among refugees, and energy poverty.
To meet these ambitious goals, EqualHouse unites a diverse team of experts from various disciplines across Europe, along with housing policymakers, providers, and end-user representatives.

GigaRegioFactory

GigaRegioFactory

The Life Giga Regio Factory project is based on the need for a change of scale in order to be able to target 10% of the market by 2030 and 1 million homes renovated to a guaranteed zero-energy level in an industrialised way in Europe. The project will develop an open-source tool for the qualification of housing in order to better qualify them and developing smarter aggregation strategy to launch large-scale collective industrial retrofits at zero-energy level. It will also coach companies that integrate and assemble industrial solutions to enable them to develop 100% industrialised offers. Within the project, we will work closely with EST metropole habitat and the Association des Organismes HLM Auvergne Rhone Alpes.

Housing Solutions for Independent Living

There is clear international support to promote greater independence and choice in housing for people with disabilities (PwD). However, it is widely agreed that people with disabilities still face challenges in accessing affordable, accessible housing. HS4IL - Housing Solutions for Independent Living project aims to identify, analyse, and disseminate innovations that effectively support accessible housing solutions for persons with disabilities. Concretely, the project will aim to create a good practices database for innovative housing experiences, prepare a detailed analysis of the needs and barriers, establish a learning network, and prepare recommendations for policymakers. The project, funded by the Erasmus+ Programme, will run for three years starting in September 2024.

install.res

Making homes more energy efficient is essential, not only for the environment but also to ensure affordable housing, without leaving anyone behind. But for this to be possible, we need large-scale and accessible solutions. Heat pumps are an effective, environment friendly and versatile starting point for achieving this goal. Thanks to the Install.res project, Housing Europe will participate in finding and testing successful solutions, and developing procedures, manuals, tools, and standards to allow developers to deploy heat pumps more rapidly and on a larger scale than currently possible. From November 2024 onwards, we will be supported by Sozial Bau, a not-for-profit housing provider from Austria.

METABUILDING Labs

METABUILDING Labs

To reach the COP26 goal of nearly-zero energy, zero emission buildings MBLabs strives to unleash the innovation potential of the SMEs of the Construction sector by lowering the entry barriers to test innovative solutions in a network of testing facilities in Research and Technology Organizations and Living Labs in 13 countries, most EU member states, allowing a direct feedback from the end-users during the final development stages. The use of this concept for the public, cooperative and social housing sector will be tested through Poly-Ouvrages in France, Casa S.p.a in Italy and Vipasa in Spain, all part of the Housing Europe network.

SOCIALNRG

Short-term solutions are not enough to ensure a sustainable and just energy transition, that would not leave behind millions of vulnerable energy-poor households. People have long been considered “victims” of the current energy system, but they are actually experts on how to improve the system and deliver basic, clean, reliable, and affordable energy services for all. The SOCIALNRG project aims to develop, test and validate a novel and fully adaptable approach to be applied in 3 pilot social housing communities in Slovenia, Italy and Belgium. The approach will be based on three pillars: establishing a participatory to create, or adapt existing, energy communities; favouring peer exchanging and learning; and forwarding recommendations to remove barriers on a policy level.
Housing Europe will ensure the coordination of the project, making sure that the concept is well implemented and the results will be widely shared, and we will be supported by the members of our network: Legacoop/Finabita (Italy), SP-Ravne (Slovenia), Woonmaatschappij Rivierenland (Belgium).

SUPER-i

SUPER-i

For a successful green transition, energy efficiency is essential. The SUPER-i project was created in order to improve access to funding for the social housing sector for energy efficiency refurbishment. Having started in 2021 and running for three years, the focus is on developing extended Public-Private Partnership for investment in smart energy efficiency in social housing. Housing Europe is working alongside Boligselskabernes Landsforening (Denmark) and Azienda Territoriale per L'edilizia Residenziale di Trieste (Italy).

SUPERSHINE

SUPERSHINE

SUPERSHINE started in mid-November in Rome with the ambition to implement innovative renovation of social and affordable housing in three demonstrator lighthouse districts in Italy, Denmark, and Latvia as well providing blueprints for follow-up districts. These are among the first lighthouse districts receiving EU funding as part of the EU Affordable Housing Initiative that will be supported by the European Affordable Housing Consortium, SHAPE-EU. Particular attention will be paid to the renovation of social housing, to help households who struggle to pay their energy bills.

Syn.ikia

Syn.ikia

Syn.ikia aims at achieving sustainable plus energy neighbourhoods while ensuring high-quality indoor environment and well-being. A Sustainable Plus Energy Neighbourhood relies on the interplay between novel technologies at the neighbourhood scale, energy efficiency & flexibility of buildings, good architectural & spatial qualities, housing affordability and citizen engagement.
Throughout the project, which will last until March 2025, four real-life plus-energy demo neighbourhood projects tailored to four different climatic zones are developed, analysed, optimised and monitored, demonstrating the functionality of the plus-energy neighbourhood concept to the rest of Europe.
