The creation of decent and affordable housing remains a top priority on the international agenda. Habitat for Humanity, the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe (UNECE) are organizing the 2nd Housing Forum Europe and Central Asia, “Promoting Sustainable Housing Futures for All”, at the Palais des Nations, in Geneva, Switzerland on April 22–24, 2013.

Gathering representatives of government, the private sector, business and financial institutions, academia, and international organizations, the forum will provide a strong platform for exchange, mutual learning and exploration among people who are committed to the cause of sustainable housing. The format will enable delegates to identify, debate and document key issues and challenges for the housing sector in Europe and Central Asia. Participants will work toward a common vision for affordable and sustainable housing in the region and identify priorities for moving forward.

Featured Speakers:

  • Sven Akalaj , Executive Secretary of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe will open the forum  
  • Raquel Rolnick, UN Special Rapporteur on adequate housing will launch the thematic discussion at the Opening Session
  • Professor David Sanderson, Director, Centre for Development and Emergency Practice (CENDEP), Faculty of Technology, Design and Environment, Oxford Brookes University will serve as Master of Ceremonies

Innovative Format

In addition to discussions and presentations by leaders in the housing field, the forum features "The Hub", a key program element with 24 parallel working sessions, 6 for each thematic track. During these sessions, hosts will elaborate on cutting-edge practices, ideas, technologies and approaches, generating fruitful discussions about the future of housing. 

The four thematic tracks are: 

  1. Regulatory Frameworks and Housing 
  2. Housing Solutions
  3. Housing Vulnerabilities and 
  4. Housing and Human Development
