The challenges and triumphs of Slovenia’s affordable housing projects

Slovenia, 18 December 2024 | Published in Urban

"I Live in an Attractive and Modern Neighbourhood," by our member, the Housing Fund of the Republic of Slovenia (SSRS), takes readers behind the scenes of affordable housing in the country.

It explores projects like the Brdo housing estate in Ljubljana, where over 1,300 apartments have been built with a focus on green spaces, playgrounds, and a variety of housing types. While we often look at well-established housing systems, the Fund shows that it is never too late to start delivering affordable homes. SSRS has already added 5,000 public rental homes to the country's housing stock and is working on even more.

In this visual booklet, you will discover what’s been well-received, including the thoughtful design of spaces that cater to families, seniors, and people with special needs. It also acknowledges some bumps along the way, such as the challenges of making diverse communities work together and the ongoing struggle to secure adequate funding for these projects. It is a real snapshot of the daily work of housing providers, balancing practical solutions with the ever-present need to create affordable and sustainable homes.
