New ways of handling the housing question

Javier Buron, Manager of Housing in the Barcelona City Council presented at the latest Housing Europe Working Committee meetings the municipal housing policy that aims to take a diverse approach towards the increasing challenges that are linked to housing availability and affordability.
Javier delivered 4 key messages:
- In Barcelona there is a housing emergency (eviction, squatters, etc.)
- But as there is life beyond the emergency, their greatest structural commitment is to relaunch the production of social housing in the city
- It is crucial to mobilize empty housing for affordable rental options and to support rehabilitation of existing buildings through the respective policy.
- Innovation is key in the promotion / obtaining access / management of affordable housing.
