Housing Exchanges: Members Webinar Series | EU Green Recovery

The EU green recovery and the contribution of the public, cooperative and social housing sector.

The public, cooperative and social housing sector forms the 11% of the total housing stock and is a key player in the green and fair transition. In the renovation roadmaps coming from the European Commission, public, cooperative and social housing has been identified as one of the key tools for recovery, particularly because it’s a labour-intensive sector. The aim of this webinar was to hear about the expectations of the European Commission from the sector and what can be used from the EU as added value from Housing Europe members. But also, to identify any potential economic gaps and whether the existing financial tools are going to help in covering those gaps: renovation of social housing through the Structural Funds, InvestEU, Recovery and Resilience Facility and the Just Transition Fund.

The European Commission Finally Shows its Hand

But what might it mean for social housing?

As outlined in our recent blog post on the issue of supporting the European economy during the COVID-19 crisis, “there will be at least three stages, in terms of the Eurozone, and the EU more broadly, agreeing measures to combat the fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic”. Wednesday’s unveiling of the ‘Next Generation EU’ recovery package by the European Commission marks the beginning of the end of the third act of this saga.
